Wavestate Inc., a medical device manufacturer in Marina Del Rey, California, develops and markets cutting-edge technology to improve neurointensive care. Our NeuroTablet and Trauma Series Monitors are designed specifically to assist in induction and maintenance of drug-induced coma. Induced coma relieves both high intracranial pressure and intractable seizure, either of which can result in death if left untreated. This type of coma is known as “burst suppression” and it suppresses brain activity and metabolism, which decreases swelling and reduces the potential for seizure. However, inducing and maintaining burst suppression coma is currently a medical management problem. It is both labor-intensive and poorly executed, resulting in over- or under-sedated patients who undergo longer than necessary hospital stays due to these inefficiencies. These monitors assess the state of coma accurately, greatly assisting staff in patient care.
Brain monitors currently available for in- and outpatient care are not designed for neurocritical care as they are cumbersome and difficult to use in intensive care settings (ICU). Our monitors are specifically designed for the ICU. The NeuroTablet and Trauma Series Monitors improve the capacity of neurocritical staff to accurately monitor and control induced coma and seizure. Expanded use of our monitors in the field will save lives lost to complications, particularly in settings where there are no neurosurgeons to intervene and where staff is unprepared to place patients into coma. Existing EEG monitors, and there are many, display, store and archive continuous EEG but they all lack a functional seizure-detection system dedicated to the kind of EEG and seizure observed in the ICU. The pathological electrographic signals commonly observed in the ICU are quite different from events recorded in otherwise healthy brains, including patients with epilepsy. Current seizure detection systems are designed to detect events in those otherwise healthy patients and not in neurocritical patients. Wavestate has developed seizure detection specifically for neurocritical patient.
